Vincent and Matisse

Matisse, Head, White and Rose, circa 1913/14)

I recently saw a really great piece of work by Vincent Hawkins, a kind of fragmented construction of a painting (Link) which blew me away. Slightly different from the other works i have recently come to know – it has an oddness i find compelling.

The work above is by Matisse. I think there is a slight superficial similarity between the Matisse and Vincent’s painting on a formal level. In each work there are strong vertical forms; warm hues of (salmon) pinks and orange contrasted against  greys and blacks. However, what i find the most striking about the two is an ‘oddness’,  which really adds to my enjoyment.
